To Rita: We all remember Rita’s famous phrase “May I speak”.
This is a tribute to one we all loved so well.
Kevin Brady
“May I speak” you cried,
And speak you did well.
You were speaker of truth,
The truth you know well.
You spoke as a mother
Of loyalty and love,
Placing your family
All others above.
And you spoke with a passion,
Your passion for art,
Your art and your drama,
You played every part.
With a restless spirit,
But an open mind,
You were oft’ as disturbing
As the wind.
When life was troubled,
And conditions were stark,
You were our trusted
Beacon in dark.
Your slightness of frame
Belied energy and strength.
Our lives in your presence
Gained wisdom and light.
Oh, speaker of truth,
Lover of art,
Our lives are the better
For your being a part
Our spirits were with you
On your final flight,
As the great bird lifted you
Towards the night.
Onward you soldiered
With frail agility,
With every heartbeat
A universe of possibilities.
“May I speak?”
Forever we still hear you cry.
We would never stop you,
Nor e’er would we try.
